Are You Ready for Generation Z?

You’ve heard about Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials, but are you ready for Generation Z?  While there is dispute over their exact age range, in general they are born between 1995 and 2010.  As such, this generation will be entering their senior year of college by the end of 2015, and then entering the workforce in droves.  What do you need to know about them?

Generation Z is the first entirely digital generation.  They have had instant access to Generation Zmedia for their entire lives – most having never having used a phone book, dictionary or encyclopedia.  They have never known a world without internet service or a home without a PC.

Keeping up with new technology is part of their everyday lives.  They have an app for everything and, if they don’t, they will create one.  Sometimes referred to as “The Silent Generation,” they lack experience in face-to-face conversations – primarily communicating via text and social media.  They excel in multi-tasking and are able to process large amounts of information but are used to it being broken up into small pieces.

For HR, this means expanding our recruiting and hiring repertoire to include social media, exchanging cell phone numbers instead of business cards, and familiarizing ourselves with the latest apps and social media that this generation is using.  Experts expect higher turnover rates for this generation as they are constantly looking for the next challenge.  HR needs to keep this in mind and keep them interested with access to training, coaching, and mentoring opportunities both within and outside the organization.  For more on preparing for and working with Generation Z, contact YPHR.
